I grew up in the either scorching hot (in the summer) or freezing cold (in the winter) Hungary, with my Mom, four cats, two horses, three dogs, two parrots and two chinchillas. Luckily I didn’t have any siblings, because there wouldn’t have been enough space for all of us in the house! I used to do kung-fu, swordfighting and dancing – not all at once though! Now I live with my boyfriend in the beautiful green city of Sheffield. In my free time I like to play boardgames, do exercise or read a good book (I especially like fantasy). I love spending time outside, and go for walks in nature as often as I can. I also like to discover new places and made a habit of travelling to a different country every year.

In my research I am trying to find out how much fruit and veg we could grow in cities and better understand the benefits of producing more food locally. Some days I will use Google Earth to pay virtual visits to people’s gardens to look at how much green space they have, on others I will be writing an article, or do some coding magic and calculate how much fruit and veg people are growing on their allotments. Or I might have a lovely chat with an old lady and find out the secret of growing the best cucumbers. What I love about my work is that I get to decide what I want to do, when and where I want to work from – I can even do it while enjoying the sun in Spain!

My Typical Day:
I roll out of bed in the morning, do some stretches and a little bit of exercise before I get ready for work. I make myself a cup of coffee and plan my day while looking at the trees through my open window. Depending on my mood, I might go to the office or one of the university libraries, or I might stay at home (especially when it’s rainy!) and work from the kitchen or my home office. In my lunch break I like to go for a walk in one of the several nearby parks. In the afternoon, I will go to a coffee shop to continue work (and have a chat with a friend over a cuppa), or if I’m staying at home I will put some banging tunes on and rock my way through the last of my workday, taking regular dance breaks between tasks.

I make myself a cup of coffee and plan my day while looking at the trees through my open window. Depending on my mood, I might pack my things, go for a nice walk through the park and go to the office or one of the university libraries, where I will sit with my laptop and enjoy a lovely breakfast while checking my emails. Or I might stay at home (especially when it’s rainy!) and work from the kitchen or my home office. What I actually do will be different every day – one day I might pay virtual visits to people’s gardens to look at how much green space they have, another day I will be writing an article or blog post, or do some coding magic and calculate how much fruit and veg people are growing on their allotments. If the weather’s nice I might spend the day outside reading about what other researchers have been up to. I also like to go to talks and workshops to hear about exciting topics, learn cool new skills and meet interesting people. After work, I go to the gym or for a run outside and move to my favourite music. In the evening, I reward myself with a really nice dinner (we like to cook together with my boyfriend) and relax over a movie, a good book or with a board board game.

What I'd do with the prize money:
Promoting ecological understanding and healthy and sustainable diets among school children by getting them to grow and eat their own vegetable.
