It is possible for sure but can be harder for athetes. I have worked with vegetarian and even vegan athletes who do perflectly well. The meals just take more planning and the portions may have to be a little bigger.

Absolutely. There are many healthy Vegans and Vegetarians who do just this with a balanced diet including lots of different types of beans and nuts.
